What do you if your professional basketball career is cut short because a factory accident fractures your leg? For Doyle Brunson, the answer was obvious; become a titan of poker. Brunson, who was born in 1933 in Texas, has been playing professional poker now for over fifty years and has become a legend of the game.

Brunson had the eye of the Minneapolis Lakers of the NBA and he harbored hopes of an NBA career. After a mountain of sheetrock fell on his leg while he was unloading it on the factory floor and it broke his leg in two places, he knew it was time to rethink his future. Doyle went on to complete both his B. A. And M. A degrees. He also launched his poker career with the Texas Rounders.

This group was basically a group of men who made the circuit of high stakes poker games throughout Texas. In the 1950s and 1960s, this band of players became famous (or some would say infamous.) In fact, one TV documentary states of them that they "cleaned Texas dry."

Eventually, Brunson stepped out of the backroom poker rooms and into Las Vegas. In Vegas, his poker skills earned him winnings of millions of dollars and many championships. In 1975, Brunson won his first bracelet (and $230,000) on the World Series of Poker (WSOP) tour. He has subsequently won 9 more bracelets, most recently in 2005.

In addition to his earnings playing poker, Brunson generates huge profits from sales of his book about Texas Hold 'Em. Originally available in 1978, this book still sells nearly 14,000 copies each month.

Doyle Brunson is now over 67 years old and still plays poker regularly. His son and daughter have joined him at some recent events. His son, Todd, won a 2005 WSOP bracelet playing in an Omaha Hi-Lo tournament.
