Bedbugs are small insects that live on human and warm blooded animals blood. They are from the cimicidae family. The insects like to live in areas where people sleep and are mostly active at night as they try to avoid sunlight hours. People who have been bitten usually have an itchy red rash on their skin.

The cimicidae family is thought to have around one hundred different species of insects. The human blood sucking species is the most common but there are some species that prefer to feed from bats and poultry. Some species also prefer warmer tropical climates.

It is usually easy to tell the age of the insect by its color. When they are first hatched, they start off a transparent pale color and as they get older their color changes to a darker brown. A fully grown adult usually measures around five millimeters long and three millimeters in width. They are flat and oval wingless insects.

The insects feed off humans by piercing the skin of their victim. They have two tube like feeders, one of which injects an anti blood clotting chemical into the human as well as an anesthetic. The other tube is used to suck the humans blood, they usually take around five minutes to feed from their host before hiding again. The insects can go for many months without food if the conditions are right.

It takes the body many hours to react to the chemicals that have been injected into it, so it is therefore a while after being bitten that the human usually sees the evidence which usually appears as a red and itchy rash. The host can become very ill as a result of the bite, however this is usually in rare cases.

Products to help deal with the itchy rash are available on the market, these have ingredients which calm the itch and reduce the urge to scratch. The products are available in creams, lotions and sprays. Medications to be taken orally are also available for people who suffer from the chemicals causing a bad reaction.

You may see signs of the insects on bed sheets, these could be blood spots or traces of feces. Regular vacuuming of the home, including vacuuming the mattresses should help to prevent an infestation of these insects. If you should be unlucky enough to find these insects in your home then it is probably best to call in experts to exterminate the home. If you do find them in your home and you have pets, the pets also have to be treated as the insects could be living in the animals coats.
